New gauges in middle aged truck

I'm in the middle of revamping the interior of a '94 Chevy S10 pickup. The dash is functional, but as long as I'm redoing things, I'd like to make it look like a mid-60's sports car, with a wooden dash and a trick set of gauiges. The problem is  I'm unsure of how well the new gauges will mate up with the sending untis on the factory provided instrumentation. In my youth, I did a similar job on a '67 GMC Handivan 10, and I could never get the gas gauge to register correctly. It would either go halfway up  when it was full or it would run out when it was halfway down. I also had some discrepancies with what the speedometer read, and the actual speed I was traveliing. I'm sure things have improved since those days, but I tried to contact VDO, the manufacturer of the gauge set that I like and they don't have any links to talk to any techs. Has anyone done a similar type of make-over, and were there any headaches involved? Thanks for the input.
