What makes modern trucks so heavy?

A 73-87 Chevy class 2 pickup in regular cab and 2wd (model C20) will have a curb weight around 4800lbs. That is with a 3400lb payload capacity and all the hardware to achieve it to go with it.

Why is a comparable pickup today 5500-6000lbs?

I don't think it is due entirely to the added electronics and stronger frames of current production models.

The same is true with cars.  I heard two main reasons----government required safety features plus the options people want today.  While trucks are bigger, cars are much smaller than the past...cars like the Taurus are smaller than Ford's mid-sized cars of the past and no car made today (in the U.S.) approaches the size of former great cars, but trucks are larger---and since the 70s and 80s, they've been made heavier due to crew cab configurations.  Many of the safety requirements we never see, like the bumper underneath the plastic...it's heavier than the chrome add-on bumpers they used to put on.  Now, cars would be much heavier if we used some of the same materials of the past, like metal grills and trim, glass headlights etc.  Now, these are all plastic so that reduces weight.

Like lasvergascolonel said, safety features, as well as luxury features, add a lot of weight.

We want more room inside and out, more capability.  We want our trucks to handle 2000 lb payload while still offering ride comfort and still be able to get two wheels off the ground (with the payload) without twisting the frame.  We want to pull 20,000 lbs up the I-70 Eisenhower Tunnel and still do 70mph.  We want a massive diesel to do 0-60 in 6 seconds, get over 20 mpgs, meet the toughest emissions standards in the world, have every feature in our trucks, we want it to last a million years, and get a 5 star crash rating.  Before, people were content with a single cab 4x2 inline six carburetored gas engine with a simple bench seat and a basic radio.  Frame strength wasn't important, neither was performance, fuel economy, comfort, crash ratings, towing ability, or emissions standards.  Yet we wonder why trucks are heavier?

Trucks vary greatly in size, power, and configuration, with the smallest being mechanically similar to an automobile. Commercial trucks can be very large and powerful, and may be configured to mount specialized equipment, such as in the case of fire trucks and concrete mixers and suction excavators. Modern trucks are largely powered by diesel engines exclusively, although small to medium size trucks with gasoline engines

Present day trucks are to a great extent fueled by diesel motors only, in spite of the fact that little to medium estimate trucks with fuel motors.Commercial trucks could be exceptionally extensive and capable, and may be arranged to mount specific supplies.
