No Boost, Lost Power

My 2005 Dodge 2500 recently started black smoking allot more than normal with some noticeable lost power.  Allot more black smoke, to the point that it was very, very evident.  I'm currently on travel and about 700 miles into the trip we stopped to get fuel, and when I re-started the engine, I had a check engine light on.  I also have a Edge and noticed I had no boost.  After checking the boots and connections (to no avail) we limped to the next town to find an auto zone to get the check engine checked, I didn't get the exact code number, but the they guy checking it said it showed a bad super charger, P299 or something like that, and asked if it had one.  He cleared the code, and it's now back to where it was, NO check engine light, allot of black smoke and has boost and is running nearly normal, but with lacking power (as it was before the check engine light).  When the check engine light was on, I had NO boost, and very limited power, just enough to get up to 60 MPH.  After clearing the code, as I said above, I have power again and boost.

I took off the turbo boots and inspected as best I could it didn't appear to have any problems, bearings, fan still there, turned, etc.

I'm guessing this is some type of sensor or something.

Any ideas would be appreciated.  I'm currently 800 miles from home, and don't want to drive and cause additional problems, but I need to get home to.

I did find a local Dodge dealer, but didn't get a chance to take it in for an inspection.  Do you think they could find the issue, even though the code has now been cleared.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance

It may be cleared but it will still be stored in the computer.

yeah, it sounds like the waste gate on the turbo isn't seated right or the map sensor could be screwed up. let us know what the dealership says.

I found a dodge dealer before getting back on the road to home, and he told me it was my air filter, (K&N cold air) and I told him it was not. I asked if he could check the codes to give me a better understanding of what it might be, and he said once the codes are cleared they are gone, but he could get his "Diesel Mechanic" to look at it for 69.96/hour.  After a few clear comments I left.

I made it 300+ miles no problems and it came back on, same issue as described in the original.  I found an autozone and he tried to clear it again, several times and it wouldn't clear.   I proceeded towared on my trip and after another 100 miles or so, I stopped for fuel and and it went back off when I restarted.  I made it the rest of the way home, no problems.  I took a coulple short trips to town over the weekend, no problems, but this morning it was on again when I started.

My boost seems to have progressively gotten worse over time, my max boost I see now is 14-15, and 2 with this issue now.

Recommendations on performance wastegates?

14-15 seems really low for those. Shouldn't it be boosting about 25-30 stock?

also maybe you could have a small hole in your intercooler or piping maybe??? and that would be enough to cause a lower boost?? just throwing out all the possibilities

yeah, you k&n wouldnt affect it that much, id say you might have a small tear in one of your boots that can only be seen under pressure.  either that you its you intercooler or waste gate.  one things for sure, youve got a leak somewhere betweeen your turbo and your intake, might even pull the intake to make the gasket there has blown out and is causing the leak.

plus that guy at the dealership is smoking dope, the tool autozone uses only reads the code and turns off the light, it cant delete the code from the computers memory, i know, my 98 had the check engine light come on for a bad TPS sensor, replaced it myself, had autozone try to clear it permantatly but they couldnt and i had to take it to a dealer to be cleared from the history.

I think the guy at the dealership was smoke'n at 69.95/ hour.

I took it to a shop I've used before, whom I've had very good luck with, and he checked things out, and it came up with a Boost Senser, which he changed out and the light went off, but my boost max was 13-14 as before with heavy black smoke.  I drove it home no light, and this morning on the way to work, it came back on, same issue, no boost.  I took it back to him and he said he'd run a complete diagnostic on it and find the problem.

Hopefully he can find the real issue.

Well, if they've for sure figured out there's no boost leak, then the ECU is probably getting a corrupt signal which is causing the wastegate to stay open and limiting boost. Yeah, might be a sensor problem.
