Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported March sales of 20,023 vehicles, up 28.3%, propelling the company to a 25.7% increase for the first quarter.

Healthy demand in both the Mercedes passenger car and light-truck categories fueled the increase in sales volume for the month. The new 9th generation E-Class continued to exhibit strong momentum with sales of 5,042 (up 154.9%) and the sporty GLK followed suit with sales of 2,333. On a year-to-date basis, the company sold 50,566 new vehicles, an increase of 25.7% over last year.

Thus far in 2010, smart sales have increased an average of 56 percent from the previous month. In addition, smart USA crossed the 40,000 U.S. vehicle sales mark in March, a significant milestone since first going on sale in early 2008. This year, smart USA is taking the fortwo to the streets and putting the vehicle in the hands of consumers with test drive events across the country. Consumers can find the latest tour schedule at www.smartusa.com/streettour. The smart fortwo offers the right balance of power, outstanding fuel efficiency, innovative safety features, environmental friendliness and excellent value. There are 78 smart centers located in 36 states.

Detailed vehicle sales information for MBUSA will be announced in a separate press release issued by Mercedes-Benz USA.

Mercedes-Benz Reports Another Strong Month With March Sales of 20,023

Sales Up 28.3 % for the Month and 25.7% Year-to-Date

MONTVALE, N.J., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported March sales of 20,023 vehicles, up 28.3%, propelling the company to a 25.7% increase for the first quarter.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100305/MERCEDES-BENZ-LOGO )

Healthy demand in both the Mercedes passenger car and light-truck categories fueled the increase in sales volume for the month. In the sedan category, the popular C-Class - the gateway to the Mercedes-Benz brand for younger as well as first-time Mercedes-Benz buyers - maintained its lead as the volume leader with sales of 6,006.

Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) program, MBUSA sold 7,797 vehicles in March; a 17.9% increase compared to March 2009 sales of 6,614 vehicles. Year-to-date sales for the MBCPO program are 20,179 - a 5.3% increase over 2009 year-to-date sales (19,161 vehicles) during the same timeframe.

New or significantly upgraded U.S. vehicles this year include the Ford Fiesta, Focus, Edge and Edge Sport, Explorer, F-Series Super Duty, Transit Connect Electric, Lincoln MKX crossover and the brand's first luxury hybrid vehicle, the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid midsize sedan.

In addition, the company is introducing nine new or upgraded fuel-efficient engines and six new transmissions this year. These include the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, new Mustang V-6 and V-8, new Super Duty 6.7-liter diesel and 6.2-liter gasoline engines.

Once again, sales were higher throughout Ford's lineup in March. Cars were up 53 percent versus a year ago, utilities were up 46 percent, and trucks were up 30 percent. Among brands, Ford sales were up 46 percent, Lincoln sales were up 19 percent, and Mercury sales were up 26 percent.

In March, Ford sales to retail customers were 38 percent higher than a year ago, and fleet sales were up 53 percent. Individuals, small businesses and large fleet customers are turning to Ford to meet their needs knowing that high-quality, class-leading fuel economy and strong resale values reduce ownership costs and provide a compelling value proposition.

In the first quarter, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 428,596, up 37 percent versus a year ago. Ford estimates its first-quarter market share was 16.5 percent, up more than 2.5 percentage points compared with a year ago.

 Additional Sales Highlights
--  Ford Fusion, Motor Trend's Car of the Year, set an all-time monthly
record in March with sales of 22,773, up 79 percent versus a year ago.
Mercury Milan sales were up 71 percent, its fifth consecutive monthly
sales increase. The Lincoln MKZ midsize sedan was up 22 percent.
--  Ford Taurus sales totaled 7,001 in March, up 86 percent.
--  Ford Focus and Ford Mustang sales each were up 57 percent versus a
     year ago.
 --  With sales of 42,514, Ford's F-Series posted a 30 percent sales
increase in March. In 2009, F-Series increased its leadership position
among full-size pickups with a 4 percentage-point gain in segment
share, and the F-Series continues to gain share in 2010. In the first
two months of 2010, F-Series' share of the full-size pickup market was
40 percent - up almost 8 percentage points versus the same period a
     year ago. F-Series - America's best-selling truck for 33 years in a
row and best-selling vehicle (car or truck) for 28 years in row - is
also the first vehicle in the U.S. to eclipse 100,000 sales in 2010 as
first quarter sales rose to 103,039.
--  Utility vehicles also posted strong sales increases. In March, Escape
set a March sales record of 19,182, up 52 percent. Edge sales were up
67 percent, Flex sales were up 17 percent, and Mercury Mariner sales
were up 25 percent. Sales for traditional SUVs (Explorer, Mountaineer,
Expedition and Navigator) also were higher than a year ago.
 --  Sales for Ford's E-Series van (Econoline/Club Wagon) were up 34
percent versus a year ago. E-Series has been America's best-selling
     full-size van for 31 years.
--  Sales of the new Transit Connect small commercial van totaled 1,836 in
March. In the first two months of 2010, Ford garnered two-thirds of
the commercial van segment, more than 8 percentage points higher than
a year ago. Production of a battery-electric Transit Connect begins
     later this year.
--  Ford's hybrid vehicles (Fusion, Milan, Escape and Mariner) posted
sales of 3,050 in March, up 69 percent versus a year ago.
Year-to-date, the company's hybrid sales totaled 7,016, up 77 percent.
Ford has sold more than 125,000 hybrid vehicles in the U.S. and is
     America's largest domestic hybrid company.

"Ford's plan is working," Czubay said. "People increasingly are discovering that the Ford difference is the strength of our fresh, new product lineup, especially our leadership in quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart technologies and value."

Note: The sales data included in this release and the accompanying tables are based largely on data reported by dealers representing their sales to retail and fleet customers.

Buick and GMC dealers in the U.S. reported sales for those brands in March that were 54 percent higher than March 2009. This led to an overall gain of 43 percent for the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands in the U.S. Total combined sales for GM's four brands were 185,406 during the month. These results are evidence that the company's plan to create sustainable and profitable growth is on track, according to Susan Docherty, GM vice president of marketing. "Our March results show continued progress toward our growth plan. By investing in our brands and remaining disciplined in our approach to the U.S. market, we posted solid results," said Docherty. "Our new vehicles, like the Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac SRX, are being well-received by customers for many good reasons, including quality, safety, excellent fuel economy, and higher resale values."

Buick sales rose 76 percent and were led by the Buick LaCrosse, with an increase of 236 percent for the month. Year-to-date, sales of the LaCrosse have increased 197 percent (read more).

Hyundai Motor America Reports Its Best-Ever First Quarter and Best-Ever March

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced an all-time sales record for both the first quarter of the year and for the month of March as the company's all-new Sonata and Tucson clearly connected with new-car buyers across the country.

The announcement was made from the floor of the New York Auto Show where on Wednesday the company introduced its second and third iterations of the 2011 Sonata. The Sonata Hybrid, the company's first U.S. hybrid, gets up to 39 mpg on the highway, using breakthrough lithium-polymer battery technology. The Sonata 2.0T delivers 274 horsepower from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while attaining an estimated 34 mpg.

In March, the company sold 47,002 vehicles, up 15.4 percent versus one year ago, marking the fifteenth consecutive month of year-over-year retail market share gains for Hyundai. And for the quarter, Hyundai Motor America sold 111,509 vehicles, outpacing the previous record first quarter of 2006. Retail-only sales data indicates that March marks Sonata's emergence as America's third best-selling mid-size sedan, trailing only Camry and Accord, and outselling vehicles like the Altima, Fusion, and Malibu in showrooms across the country. "It's gratifying to announce these strong results in New York as we introduce three new models, including our new flagship luxury sedan, Equus, to the freshest lineup in the industry," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's vice present of national sales. "We're confident improving availability of our new products will allow us to sustain this strong sales momentum."

On a year-over-year basis, Sonata was up 52.6 percent, Tucson was up 129.1 percent, Santa Fe was up 62.8 percent, and Genesis was up 31.9 percent, marking the 9th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gain for Genesis.

Audi U.S. Sales in March Set a Record, Giving the Brand the Best First Quarter in its History

- Overall Audi sales in March increased 33.5% from a year earlier - March sales of the Audi A5 set an all-time record - TDI clean diesel models made up nearly half of all A3 and Q7 sales

HERNDON, Va., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Audi today reported its March U.S. sales set a record for the month, rising 33.5% from a year earlier. The results also helped Audi achieve the best first-quarter sales since it began marketing cars in the U.S., and sent 2010 year-to-date sales up 34.8%.

In the most recent month, Audi U.S. sales reached 8,589 luxury cars and SUVs, compared to 6,433 in March 2009. That topped the previous March sales record set in 2007. First quarter sales in 2010 topped the previous record set in the first quarter of 2007. Strong demand across the Audi model lineup led to the record U.S. March results.

"It's one thing to improve on sales from a year earlier when the U.S. economy was in a malaise," said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. "But it says something more profound about the Audi momentum story when the brand notches a record sales month in 2010 and a record sales quarter."

Audi A5 sets single-month sales record

Strong demand for the luxury performance Audi A5/S5 coupes continued in March with sales rising 59.8% over March 2009 and an increase of 41.8% from the first three months of 2009.

Sales of the Audi A5 Cabriolet in March reached their highest monthly level. The A5 Cabriolet arrived in the U.S. market last August. Combined A5/S5 coupe and cabriolet sales increased 154.9% in March 2009 from a year earlier.

Big increase for Audi A3, lead by the '2010 Green Car of the Year'

Demand for the Audi A3 luxury compact car jumped 100% from a year earlier. Audi A3 sales increased 109.2% through the first three months of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009.

Those gains were due to strong sales of the A3 TDI model, which is the reigning 2010 Green Car of the Year. The clean diesel Audi A3 TDI continued to top forecasts by comprising 49.5% of the model's sales mix.

Audi Q5, Audi Q7 March sales see big gains

The Audi Q5 crossover has consistently ranked among the most highly sought Audi vehicles since its debut in early 2009. Sales of the versatile Q5 increased 55.5% in March from a year earlier and 60.5% when compared to February 2010 sales.

The Audi Q7 SUV also gained in March with sales that finished 19.4% higher than a year earlier. The Q7 TDI clean diesel model remains a hit with consumers, making up 40.9% of the sales mix for the most recent month.

Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales fell 10.4% in February from a year earlier largely due to constricted inventories.
