Diesels are only found on three-quarter ton and up trucks, unless you would like to wait for the Mahindra light-duty.
Pros: Torque, distinctive diesel sound (if you do like it), longevity, good for towing and hauling much bigger items, fuel economy
Cons: Price, distinctive diesel sound (if you don't like it), fewer good diesel mechanics, stigma attached to diesels, may not be the best choice for cold climates, fuel availability
Ultimately, if you don't prefer a specific brand or model, a well-kept used diesel that fits your budget would probably be your best solution. I'm sure others can chime in on their views and experiences with the different makes and models.

I've owned two diesel trucks. Diesel gets better mileage, cheaper to maintain and is high in toque. If you want to buy new truck then check your needs, budget and driving conditions.

If your intention is pulling then the 3/4 to 1 ton GM truck has a pulling capacity of 27,000 lbs. But torque numbers should be the concern. Thats what gets the load moving.
My buddies and I decided to pull our race cars on a small tour 6 years ago. We hit the hills through the mid west. My buddy has the same truck. Both 2002 GMC Sierra 2500HD as I do. With one exception he has a diesel, with an Allison Trans. I have a 6.0 vortec We have the same rear gears ratios. The loads we had were about the same,I had more room in my trailer so I had some spare engine parts and trans. He pulled the hills better, as we both expected, but running on flat ground he couldn't get the top end. I averaged 16 MPG he averaged 20MPG. If I were pulling heavy loads the GM diesel with the Allison is the way to go. The nice thing it's long wheelbase 157.6" made it ride. Braking down hills I never real noticed any problem. My trans has the Tow/Haul mode selector. That makes a difference. I have been pulling race cars from the flat towing days,so as the trucks had gotten better, it's a pleasure to Haul.
