Audi reports its third-best October for U.S. sales
- Last month only trailed record set in October 2008 by 1.1% - Consumer demand continues to surge for the Audi Q5 crossover - Strong sales seen with the Audi Q7 TDI® and the all-new A5 Cabriolet
HERNDON, Va., Nov 3, 2009 - Audi today reported October sales in the U.S. of 7,358 luxury performance cars and SUVs, a result that approached the all-time October record set by the brand a year earlier.
The latest full-month sales only trailed the 7,443 Audi vehicles sold in October 2008 following the introduction of the all-new Audi A4, and the 7,420 sold in October 2007, when the U.S. luxury car market was nearing its sales peak in the U.S.
"There can be no questioning the enthusiasm for the Audi brand that continues as we unveil new products and build on the momentum we’ve established in prestige and customer satisfaction," said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. "We believe the long-term value of our products speaks for itself. Clearly, the American consumer is listening."
Demand continued to surge in October for the Audi Q5 3.2 quattro®, which has exceeded sales expectations since its introduction in February 2009. Despite restricted supply, Audi reported sales of 1,238 Q5 models for the most recent month, a pace that suggests the Audi crossover remains one of the fastest turning cars on dealer lots in the U.S.
Audi had a 15-days supply of unsold Q5 models in its sales pipeline at the end of October.
The Audi A5/ S5 coupes also remained extremely popular with October sales increasing 28% and year-to-date sales jumping 45.3% from the first 10 months of 2008.
American interest in the exceptional performance and efficiency found in Audi TDI clean diesel technology continued to build in October. TDI clean diesel technology delivers 30% better fuel-economy than a comparable gasoline-powered engine and produces 20% less greenhouse gas. Sales of the Audi Q7 TDI increased to 41% of all Q7 models sold during the month. That far exceeded original expectations that demand for the TDI models would equal 15-18% of Q7 sales. Partly as a result of strong TDI sales, inventories of unsold Q7 models stood at a 24-days supply.
Based on preliminary industry sales reports, Audi is confident its year-to-date share of the imported luxury vehicle market in the U.S. will approach the 8.6% level registered by the record October sales of 2008. Audi expects to show it remains the best-performing luxury brand with regard to year-over-year sales performance for year-to-date 2009.
Audi sold 5,449 cars and 1,909 SUVs in October.
Audi will continue its new-product momentum later this month with the launch of the Audi A3 TDI®. This model will revolutionize fuel efficiency in the luxury segment by achieving 42 mpg in highway driving, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. That’s a fuel economy rating unmatched by all other luxury models.

BMW Group U.S. Division Reports October 2009 Sales
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported October sales of 20,619 vehicles, a decrease of 19.1 percent from the 25,475 vehicles sold in the same month of 2008. The BMW Group also reported a year-to-date sales volume of 199,838 vehicles, down 23.7 percent compared to 261,802 vehicles sold in the first ten months of last year.
BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 18.6 percent in October for a total of 16,443 vehicles compared to 20,203 vehicles reported in the same month a year ago. The sales volume met BMW's expectations for the month and reflected limited inventory of the new 2010 model lineup, which began to arrive at dealerships in the middle of October. Year-to-date, BMW brand sales were down 25.6 percent to 160,666 vehicles compared to 215,836 vehicles sold in the same period of 2008.
"In October, we continue to see the trend of high volume premium models grabbing the majority of sales while lower volume specialty vehicles lag their previous year's performance," said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. "That's why we are concentrating our efforts on our core 3, 5, 7 and X5 series - all of which performed well with the 7 Series showing its best single month performance, outselling the same month last year by 10.3 percent to now lead the segment for the first time this year."
BMW Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)
In October, sales of BMW's Certified Pre-Owned vehicles increased 31.9 percent to 10,467 CPO vehicles versus 7,937 vehicles reported a year ago. Year-to-date, CPO sales were up 11.6 percent to 94,982 over the 85,081 reported in the same period of 2008.
MINI Brand Sales
MINI USA reported sales of 4,176 automobiles, a decrease of 20.8 percent compared to 5,272 cars reported in the same month a year ago when MINI benefited over-proportionally from $4 dollar gas prices. Year-to-date, MINI USA also reported sales of 39,172 automobiles, a decrease of 14.8 percent, compared to the 45,966 cars reported in the first ten months of 2008.
"October played trick or treat with us and we got a mixed bag of news with no clear trend," said Jim McDowell, Vice President MINI USA. "While our dealers reported a lot of cautious customers and pragmatic buying choices, we also saw an inspiring performance in the West with sales being above last year."

"Consumer demand for our new high-quality, fuel-efficient products is driving Ford's market share gains," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing Sales and Service. "Ford vehicles are among the 'freshest' available by any automaker - with more than 80 percent of our sales in October coming from our new 2010 models."
Ford estimates its total market share in October was more than 15 percent - higher than a year ago and higher than its share in the first nine months of 2009. Ford's October retail share was up for the 12th time in 13 months.
"The Ford plan is working, led by the strength of our product lineup and customer demand for our new cars, utilities and trucks," said Czubay. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac Drive First GM Sales Increase in 21 Months
DETROIT, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- A strong performance by GM's four core brands -- Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac -- resulted in GM U.S. October sales of 177,603 vehicles, up 4 percent from last October, the company's first year-over-year gain since January 2008. Total sales increased 13 percent when compared with September. The four brands accounted for about 95 percent of GM's retail sales, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to the prior year.
"We're very pleased with consumer acceptance to our newest cars, crossovers and trucks," said Susan Docherty, GM vice president, U.S. Sales. "While we have more work to do, we are making progress and will continue our focus on delivering vehicles and a sales and service experience that brings consumers to Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac - and keeps them coming back."
October quick facts:
* Total GM sales increased 4 percent compared with October, 2008; retail sales were up 15 percent for the same period. * Year-over-year total sales increase is the first since January, 2008. * GM gains market share for the third straight month - estimated at 21 percent of the total light vehicle market. * Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac retail sales represented 95 percent of October retail sales vs. 85 percent in October, 2008. * Combined Buick / GMC retail sales were up 33 percent compared with last year, driving Buick-Pontiac-GMC retail sales up 12 percent.
Chevrolet Retail Sales Up 31 Percent
Strong retail sales of Chevrolet's launch vehicles - Camaro, Equinox, and Traverse - led to a year-over-year increase in total sales of 9 percent, and a 31 percent increase in retail sales for the same period.
Chevrolet key facts:
* Malibu retail sales for Malibu were up 84 percent compared to a year ago. * Camaro continues to distance itself from competition, selling nearly 8,000 vehicles during the month and we anticipate we will hold the top spot in the regular sports car segment. * Corvette retains the number one position in the luxury sports car segment with nearly 28 percent of the market. * Equinox share in compact crossover segment is growing, having more than doubled in a year to 10 percent - the highest since August, 2007; added a third shift to keep up with demand. * Silverado total sales of 31,800 were driven by the strength of Chevrolet's "Truck Month" promotion.
"Chevrolet had a solid sales month in October supported by our 2009 launch products Camaro, Equinox and Traverse," said Brent Dewar, vice president, global Chevrolet. "Our broad lineup appeals to a range of consumers, whether it's the modern sports car, Camaro, appealing to performance enthusiasts or the Equinox and Traverse delivering what today's families care about: safety, styling and efficiency."
Buick - GMC Total Sales Up 33 Percent
Buick car and crossover sales showed improvement in October vs. a year ago, led by the all-new LaCrosse and Enclave. Sales of the all-new GMC Terrain and GMC's "Truck Month" promotion helped lift GMC total sales 20 percent, and retail sales 35 percent for the month, compared with last year.
Buick key facts:
* Buick had its best total sales month for 2009 (9,053) and best since October '08, up 19 percent. * LaCrosse had strongest month since launch, up 36 percent compared with September 2009, and up 103 percent compared to October 2008. * Enclave total sales up year-over-year 38 percent. * Lucerne had highest sales month of 2009 with sales of 4,324.

"We like the momentum we've seen in the sales of new Buick and GMC models," said Susan Docherty, Buick-GMC general manager, and GM Vice President of U.S. Sales. "In October, Buick and GMC both had their best sales months of 2009, and in fact, total sales for these two brands were up 33 percent over October 2008 for the combined total of Buick, Pontiac and GMC."
Cadillac Total Sales Up 22 Percent
Led by the performance of the all-new SRX, Cadillac sales increased by 22 percent compared to a year ago, and were up 2 percent vs. September.

* SRX: total sales were 280 percent higher than October 2008 and were up 21 percent compared to September - the second best performance of the vehicle in history. * SRX: days supply is 34 days, based on month-end inventory. * Escalade: Year-over-year total sales were 37 percent higher and market share continues to outperform competitors, including the Mercedes GL and Lexus LX 570.
"The interest customers are showing in the new SRX is exciting - we are seeing Lexus, BMW and Mercedes customers trading their vehicles for the SRX," said Bryan Nesbitt, Cadillac General Manager.
Other brands Sold 15,089 Vehicles in October
Total combined sales for Saturn, Pontiac, Saab and HUMMER were 15,089 for the month. As a percent of total GM sales, these brands represented 9 percent of sales, compared with 15 percent in October 2008.
Management Discussion of October Sales Results
The U.S. October 2009 SAAR of 10.6 million is a 13-percent improvement compared to last month, but is the second-lowest SAAR for October since the early 1980s. The U.S. economy and auto industry are showing signs of recovery:
Economy
* Normalization of credit spread, which is down to approximately 20 to 30 basis points - is helping make more credit available to consumers. However, consumer credit is still contracting - reflecting both weak credit demand and cautious bank lending. * Consumer confidence has softened a bit in October, but remains much improved from the trough in March. * Manufacturing sector is increasing output due to depleted current inventories. * Job losses continue to slow, however employment levels continue to be a concern. * Housing starts and home resale prices are beginning to stabilize.
Auto Industry
* Industry estimated October SAAR of 10.6 million could be the highest monthly SAAR since November 2008. * It appears that the bulk of the "Cash-for-Clunkers" pull-ahead occurred by the end of September. * Industry inventory levels are anticipated to increase moderately into Q4 to support modestly rising industry sales.
GM Reports October Production; Fourth Quarter Production at 620,000 Vehicles
In October, GM produced 228,000 vehicles (92,000 cars and 136,000 trucks). This is down 90,000 vehicles, or 28 percent compared with October 2008, when GM North America produced 318,000 vehicles (151,000 cars and 167,000 trucks). (Production totals include joint venture production of 15,000 vehicles in October 2009 and 11,000 vehicles in October 2008)
GM third quarter production was 531,000 vehicles (205,000 cars and 326,000 trucks), which was down 42 percent compared to the same quarter in 2008. GM North America built 915,000 vehicles (436,000 cars and 479,000 trucks) in the third quarter of 2008. However, third quarter production was substantially higher than production volumes for Q1 and Q2 2009 of 371,000 (up 43 percent) and 395,000 (up 34 percent), respectively.
GM's 2009 fourth quarter forecast at 620,000 vehicles (239,000 cars and 381,000 trucks), which is down about 24 percent from a year ago. GM North America built 815,000 vehicles (365,000 cars and 450,000 trucks) in the fourth quarter of 2008. However, Q4 2009 production volumes represent a 17 percent increase compared to Q3 2009.
At October month-end, inventories of vehicles for U.S. dealers increased to 444,000 (172,000 cars and 272,000 trucks) compared to September, 2009 (157,000 cars and 267,000 trucks), an increase of 5 percent. Compared to month-end inventories for October 2008 (336,000 cars and 464,000 trucks), inventories decreased by 356,000 (164.000 cars and 192,000 trucks), or 45 percent.

Hyundai Motor America Reports October 2009 Sales Hyundai Leads all Automotive Brands in Market Share Growth This Year
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced October sales of 31,005 units, a 49 percent increase compared with October 2008. Calendar year-to-date, Hyundai sales are up 4 percent. This marks the tenth consecutive month of year-over-year gains in retail market share. Hyundai leads all automotive brands in absolute market share growth, up 1.2 percentage points (from 3.1 percent to 4.3 percent) for the first ten months of this year.
"We've done a good job of selling down our 2009 model year inventory over the last few months, with about two-thirds of Hyundai car sales in October being fresh, 2010 model year vehicles," said Dave Zuchowski, vice president of sales. "With the recent encouraging economic news of a 3.5 percent GDP growth during the third quarter, the best in two years, we are looking forward to the final two months of the year. We have our all-new Tucson launching at the end of this year and the 2011 Sonata coming early next year, so we are excited about the terrific new products we'll be filling our dealerships with."
Genesis continued its strong growth trend with sales of 1,850, a 65 percent increase. The fuel-efficient Accent and Elantra had significant increases of 106 percent and 225 percent respectively versus 2008 while the Santa Fe delivered a solid sales gain of 70 percent leading up to the introduction of the even more fuel-efficient face lifted 2010 model coming early next year.

Mercedes-Benz Reports October Sales of 18,193 Highest Month of the Year
MONTVALE, N.J., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported October sales of 18,193 vehicles, its highest month of the year and a 21.3% improvement over October 2008.
"Clearly we're very pleased with this month's result and we believe that we will be able to parlay this into a strong fourth quarter and continued increases in our market share," said Ernst Lieb, President & CEO of MBUSA. "This is validation of the 'back to basics' approach we have undertaken in partnership with our retail network, utilizing the current economic environment to strengthen the customer experience and promote the value inherent in our product line." Lieb said the sales gains for the month were also influenced by a more stabile economic environment relative to last year and to the momentum of the company's new products -- the compact SUV GLK-Class and the new 9th generation E-Class -- as well as volume leaders like its C- and M-Class model lines.
The GLK-Class, introduced in January 2009, has outsold every vehicle in its class on a year-to-date basis. The all-new, 9th generation E-Class, launched in late June, recorded sales of 6,071 for October 2009, up 189.4% over October 2008. The other volume leaders for the month were the C-Class and M-Class with sales of 4,122, and 2,370 respectively.
On a year-to-date basis, the company sold 153,606 new vehicles, trailing the comparable period last year by 20.1%.
Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) program, MBUSA sold 5,433 vehicles in October; a 13 percent increase compared to October 2008 sales of 4,807 vehicles. Year-to-date sales for the MBCPO program are 62,161, a 17.8 percent increase over 2008 year-to-date sales (52,753 vehicles).
