Chrysler LLC Posts Best Retail Month of the Year; Reports May 2009 Sales

- Chrysler LLC posts best retail sales month of 2009

- Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands post double-digit retail sales gains compared to previous month

- Jeep Wrangler sales continue upward trend increasing 4 percent year-over-year compared to May 2008

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler LLC today reported May U.S. total sales of 79,010 units, representing the best retail sales month of 2009 and a retail performance that was better than the industry average. Compared to May 2008, retail sales decreased 30 percent. During the month of May, Chrysler LLC did not produce any vehicles for fleet sales which resulted in a fleet sales reduction of 90 percent year-over-year for the same period.

"We are pleased that consumers responded to Chrysler's reorganization by purchasing our products, resulting in our best retail sales month of the year," said Jim Press, Vice Chairman and President - Chrysler LLC. "Overall our sales were above expectations during this month of transition."

On June 1, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the sale of the majority of Chrysler LLC's assets to a new company, Chrysler Group LLC in alliance with Fiat S.p.A.

"The uncertainty that has been surrounding Chrysler for the last few months is coming to an end, and a vibrant, new company is beginning to take shape," Press added. "One that will better serve our customers and dealers with a broader and more competitive lineup of environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient, high-quality vehicles."

 May Sales Highlights

--  May was the best retail sales month of 2009, with 74,741 retail units
     sold.

--  Jeep Wrangler continued its strong upward sales trend for the fifth
month in a row, with May retail sales up 4 percent year-over-year

"May was a very encouraging retail month for Chrysler and the industry," said Steven Landry, Executive Vice President North American Sales and Marketing, Service and Parts - Chrysler LLC. "Retail sales for the industry came in stronger than expected and our retail performance during our restructuring was even stronger than the industry, giving us improved share and optimism that the market is showing signs of life."

BMW Group U.S. Division Reports May 2009 Sales

- Overall sales (BMW and MINI) down 27.7 percent in May

- BMW brand reported best month so far this year

- BMW 3 Series hits two million milestone since its introduction in the US in 1976

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported May sales of 22,993 vehicles, a decrease of 27.7 percent from the 31,781 vehicles sold in the same month of 2008. The BMW Group also reported a year-to-date sales volume of 93,599 vehicles, down 29 percent, compared to 131,758 vehicles sold in the same period a year ago.

BMW Brand Sales

With 18,383 vehicles sold, the BMW brand reported its best month so far this year. Compared to the 25,469 vehicles reported in the same month a year ago, this is a decrease of 27.8 percent. Year-to-date, BMW brand sales were down 30.5 percent to 76,819 vehicles compared to 110,569 vehicles sold in the same period of 2008.

"This month, the Northeast and Midwest showed signs of buyers' interest and that's a positive aspect for the whole premium market," said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. "We have been seeing all year, customers remain cautious, and when they shop for premium products they are buying brands that have a history of value, dependability and enduring quality. This has helped sales in our core 3 Series, 5 Series and X5 range."

The company's Ultimate Service including the four-year, no cost maintenance program combined with one of the highest residual values in the industry further contributes to BMW being a safe and secure purchase in this environment.

In May, the BMW 3 Series reached an important milestone in the U.S. with over two million units sold since the launch of the first 3 Series (320i) in November 1976. The BMW 3 Series has remained the unrivaled benchmark in the premium segment for more than 30 years.

BMW Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)

Sales of BMW's Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are up 8.3 percent, to 10,410 CPO vehicles versus 9,616 vehicles reported last May 2008. Year-to-date, CPO sales are up 9.8 percent, to 48,410 over the 44,077 reported in the same period of 2008. Since the beginning of the year, BMW has seen a strong performance of its certified used car business with May being the second best month in the history of the CPO program.

MINI Brand Sales

MINI USA reported sales of 4,610 automobiles, down 27 percent from the 6,312 cars sold in May 2008. Year-to-date, MINI USA also reported sales of 16,780 automobiles, a decrease of 20.8 percent, compared to the 21,189 cars reported in May 2008.

"In May, the small car market continued to be soft due to restraint in new car purchases and gas prices that are around 40 percent lower than a year ago," said Jim McDowell, Vice President of MINI USA. "Nonetheless, once again last month, MINI sales improved over the previous month and we continued to outperform the segment by a wide margin."

Hyundai Motor America Reports May 2009 Sales

Hyundai Urges Quick Passage of Fleet Modernization Program

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced sales of 36,937 vehicles in May, a nine percent increase over April and a 20 percent decline versus a record-setting May 2008.

"Record sales of our new Genesis and Elantra Touring models, and continued strength of core models like the Alabama-built Sonata and Santa Fe, lift our retail market share to its highest level of the year," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America vice president of national sales. "What's even more heartening for us is that May marks the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year monthly retail share gains, even as we've been steadily reducing our incentive spending."

While making its May sales announcement, Hyundai Chief Executive Officer John Krafcik commented on the pending Fleet Modernization program. "While Hyundai has fared better than most others over the last several months, we can't lose sight of the fact that U.S. auto industry sales are now forecast at the lowest levels in 26 years," Krafcik said. "It is imperative that the country move forward with the Fleet Modernization program. Our research shows that one in nine car buyers are delaying their purchases until the legislation is resolved.

"The longer this bill remains stuck in Congress, the greater the pressures placed on all aspects of the U.S. automotive industry - from suppliers to manufacturers to dealers. We urge Congress to move quickly so that American consumers can benefit from this bill during the peak summer buying season," said Krafcik.

More than half of all vehicles sold by Hyundai Motor America are manufactured in the United States at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing in Montgomery, AL. In total, Hyundai directly employs more than 5,000 people in the U.S., with facilities in 14 states across the country. Including its almost 800 dealers and suppliers, Hyundai has created more than 35,000 jobs in the United States.

As Hyundai's market share climbs, so too does the list of awards and accolades. The 2009 Hyundai Genesis is both North American Car of the Year and its V8 engine is on Ward's Auto World's "10 Best Engines" list. The Genesis also received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, along with Entourage, Santa Fe and Veracruz.

The Alabama-built 2009 Sonata was the highest ranked Premium Mid-Size Car in AutoPacific's 2009 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards, and the Genesis topped the Aspirational Luxury Car category. Hyundai has also increased its lead over the industry average in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study(SM) (VDS).

All new Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by America's Best Warranty. In addition, the Hyundai Assurance Program is now offered on all new Hyundai's leased or purchased at a participating Hyundai dealership. Hyundai Assurance provides protection from certain income-changing life events, allowing consumers to return their vehicles in the first year of ownership without impacting their credit histories, while covering vehicle depreciation (negative equity) up to $7,500.

Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co. of Korea. Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced by more than 780 dealerships nationwide.

Strong New Products Drive Ford Sales, Share in May

-- Ford Fusion, Ford Flex and hybrids set sales records

-- MKS and MKZ sedans help Lincoln brand post sales increase

-- Ford, Lincoln and Mercury market share grows to highest level since 2006

-- Ford sales totaled 155,954, up 20 percent versus April, and the highest sales for any month since July 2008

-- Stronger sales reduce inventories, prompting Ford to announce production increases for second, third quarter

-- Ford kicks off summer with "Drive the Ford Difference" promotion

DEARBORN, Mich., June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- New products helped Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) achieve its highest market share in three years, even as Ford decreased incentive spending in May. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 155,954, up 20 percent versus April and the highest sales for any month since July 2008.

Sales of the Ford Fusion were 19,786, Ford Flex sales were 4,305 and sales of the company's hybrid vehicles totaled 3,906 - setting three new sales records. In addition, Lincoln's new sedans, the MKZ and MKS, helped the luxury brand post a 2 percent sales increase.

"Consideration for our new products is increasing," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, Sales and Marketing. "Even as the competitive environment intensifies, Ford's relentless pursuit of quality, fuel efficiency, smart technology and appealing designs is winning new customers."

The previous Fusion record was set last month with 18,321 cars when Fusion cracked the foreign stranglehold on the mid-size sedan market. It was the first time since July 2002 that a domestic car was one of the top three mid-size cars selling to retail customers. Recent independent studies rate Fusion and the Mercury Milan as having the best predicted reliability among all mid-size sedans. In addition, both models are rated the most fuel-efficient sedans in America.

Combined sales for the Fusion and Milan hybrids and the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrids totaled 3,906 - a new company record for hybrid sales in a single month. The previous record was set in April 2006, with 3,420 hybrids.

The previous Flex record also was set last month with 3,190 vehicles. Combined sales for all crossover utilities were 35,582, Ford's strongest crossover sales month since last May.

May marked the first full sales month of the 2010 Ford Mustang. Mustang sales totaled 8,812, the highest sales month since last July. This year marks the 45th anniversary of America's legendary pony car.

Lincoln was one of the few brands in the U.S. to achieve a sales increase in May. Lincoln sales totaled 8,566, up 2 percent versus a year ago. Lincoln's sedans, the all-new MKS, redesigned MKZ and venerable Town Car paced Lincoln's sales increase. A new Lincoln full-size crossover, the MKT, will debut later this year.

Inventories and Production

At the end of May, Ford vehicle inventories totaled 350,000 (equivalent to 56 days' supply). This level was 41,000 vehicles lower than at the end of April and 210,000 vehicles lower than a year ago.

Given tightly controlled inventories and the strength of its new products in the market, Ford is increasing second quarter North American production by 10,000 vehicles (to 445,000). Ford also announced it plans to build 460,000 vehicles in the third quarter, an increase of 42,000 vehicles compared with third quarter 2008.

"At Ford, the future is now," said Czubay. "New products account for 50 percent of our sales, and demand for these products is driving our market share gains. We encourage customers who are in the market for a new vehicle to 'Drive the Ford Difference.'"

To provide added incentive, Ford is announcing a new summer merchandising program, Drive the Ford Difference. From June 2 through June 30, Ford will cover up to three months' worth of payments up to $2,100, and Ford Credit will offer 0 percent financing on select Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.
