Diesel fuel nationwide is cheaper on average than regular gasoline, according to the latest results published by U.S. Department of Energy.
As of last Monday (5/11/2009), diesel cost $2.22 per gallon, around two cents less than gasoline. The same time last year, a gallon of diesel would have set you back $2.11, some 63 cents more than a gallon of gas at $1.48.
Safe to say, it's anyone's guess as to the future of fuel prices. Just last summer, areas of the country saw gasoline and diesel prices peek into the realm of $5 per gallon -- though most analysts agree that the U.S. will avoid a similar hike again this summer. Still, with diesel becoming competitive with gasoline price-wise, manufacturers pushing their new clean diesels on this side of the Atlantic have plenty to cheer about.
Lucky for us, we've got two oil burners in our Long Term fleet -- a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and 2009 BMW 335d. Stay tuned for updates on our experiences living with each vehicle right here on Motor Trend Online.

And most of the OEs are still saying "diesel will never take off in America." Hmm. Go figure.
