After last year's Top Gear expedition to the North Pole in a Toyota Hilux pickup truck, arctic enthusiasts have decided to conquer the South Pole in a similar fashion.

The trucks were requested as support vehicles for the Amundsen Omega3 South Pole Race which is a 483-mile skiing challenge that celebrates the rivalry of South Pole explorers Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott. Outfitted by Arctic Trucks of Reykjavik, the same company that tuned the Top Gear rig, the four trucks were equipped with a system that uses the engine's heat to melt snow as well as several other enhancements to ensure the models could operate at temperatures as low as -30C (-22F).

Toyota is quick to point out that compared to traditional snowcats the Hilux is faster, more fuel efficient, carries more passengers, and produces lower C02 emissions.
