hey..new here.  I have been researching a towing rig for my toy (2008 310 Sea Ray Sundancer).  While I don't want to drop an arm and a leg...am more concerned in finding the right vehicle to towing.  I am not a greenhorn at towing, in my past life, have worked a harvest circut towing 9600 JohnDeer combines down some narrow roads etc.

Anyrate, am trying to decide between Dodge 5500/dually etc. or something like a Freightliner M2 Sport Chassis.
When it comes down to it...one is fancy, the other not so fancy, but pulling etc..all are about the same.

My reqs, the boat: 14,000# Dry weight. 4axle "bumper pull" trailer (electrice brakes) at aboutr 2000#.  For good measure, I chalk it up at 18-19K# just to be on the back the toter.  Now..you have the toter, fuel, people etc..to add.

Does anyone have any experience with the Dodge and or Freightliner M2 106 Sport Chassis..and or the GMC/Topkick 4500/5500?  All are close...but am not looking for close.  I know a 3500 Dually can pull this thing...it did from Montana to Colorado.  I want safety in all aspects..comfort is good as well.  I don't care about doing 70 down the damm road..just ignorant with this type of thing. I want to stop when I have too, period.

any input is greatly appreciated..sorry for the long chit chat

Doesn't sound like you're ignorant at all! How important is fuel economy to you? On paper, the Ford F-450 or F-550 would be a good fit, but they're geared super-low, and get horrible fuel economy. I think you'd be better off with a bigger truck with a bigger engine, that wouldn't have to work as hard. more along the lines of like the Top Kick or F-650. I'd probably lean toward the F-650, because you can get it with the CAT C7 engine, and as far as I know, the top engine on the Monroe Top Kick/Kodiak conversions is the 6.6L Duramax.

International had the MXT/RXT for a while, but I think I just read somewhere they discontinued them, but you could probably find one slightly used. Hope this helps.

I think, the frieghtliner might carry the same cummins motor as in the dodge, or they could be using a Benz diesel. I agree with the other posts in using a truck bigger and a 1 ton pickup. the F650 with the Cat motor as stated before would be a nice choice
