Since joining the IRL in 2005, driver Danica Patrick has had a long streak of hard luck, going 50 races without a victory. This weekend, however, she made history by finishing first at the Indy Japan 300, becoming the first woman to ever win an IndyCar race.
Patrick, who turned 26 just three weeks ago, previously came in second at Detroit in 2007, at the time tying with Sarah Fisher for the best IRL finish by a woman, who had set the record at Miami in 2001. Racing in Japan for the Andretti Green team, Patrick was as far back as eighth on the 189th lap of the 200-lap race, but her fuel-saving strategy allowed her to stay on the track when others had to pit, jumping her into second place. From there she set her sights on race leader Helio Castroneves, finally passing him with just two laps remaining to bring home the checkered flag.
