What does 35-mpg CAFE mean for the future of the pickup as we know it?
What's more, truck guys are passionate, opinionated -- and conservative. As Schiavone says: "They told us they wanted the new F-150 to be tougher. But they also said 'Don't you dare change it!'" But there's no question the tough new CAFE rules -- and a looming generational change among potential buyers -- mean Schiavone and his colleagues inside Ford are beginning to wonder whether they dare rethink the pickup truck.
Now, before all you F-150 guys head for the comment box with flamethrowers, that doesn't mean the F-150 is going to go away. Far from it, in fact -- in addition to the new V-8 to be launched with the forthcoming Harley edition, this latest F-150's getting a new diesel and a version of the turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 to help improve its gas mileage over the coming years.
What Ford insiders are wondering is if there's a new vehicle they can add to the range that brings the tough style and honest functionality of the pickup more in line with tomorrow's brave new gas-conscious world.
