Opel Zafira

A compact seven-person minivan based on the next-generation Opel Zafira will reportedly be joining Chevrolet's lineup by 2009, according to Automotive News. Code-named MPV-7, the vehicle will be built in Hamtramck, Michigan, and will be available for export as well as domestic sales.

The vehicle, which is similar in scope to the compact Mazda5, will reportedly be priced starting in the high $20,000 range and will likely be positioned as a premium vehicle. Styling of the MPV-7 is reported to be boxier and "more masculine" than that of the Zafira and it's believed that a unique interior is in the works.

Apparently, GM believes it can sell some 100,000 MPV-7 in the U.S. per year. Additionally, an imported version of the Zafira badged as a Saturn is reported to be under consideration.

Given GM's history with minivans, does this seem like a smart move? Do you think U.S. consumers will take to compact minivan-like vehicles that have been successful in Europe?
