The Audi Q7 TDI: Diesel SUV on roller coaster ride to U.S.

Audi has been teasing us with diesel variants of its Q7 SUV for some time now. Way back in September of last year, Audi announced that a 6.0-liter V-12 TDI version of the Q7 would become available in Europe, but not in the U.S. Producing 500 horsepower and a monstrous 738 lb-ft of torque, we were pretty jealous. Enthusiasts even more so, upon hearing the engine was based on the same unit used to power the Audi R10 Le Mans race car to numerous victories.

Fast forward to last week, and Audi once again disappointed. Sure, we were still getting the V-6 TDI, but not until early 2009. Why? Marketing reasons, mainly. Audi just couldn't justify releasing a hot new model while the buying public is in the model year-end clearance mindset. Plus, by moving the release up a year, Audi could market the diesel Q7 as a 2010 model which might inspire buyers to head on down to their local dealers even faster.

So where are we at now on the U.S.-spec Audi Q7 TDI roller-coaster thrill ride? Well, the release schedule hasn't changed, but the power has. The latest word from Audi is that they've managed to push the output up on the 3.0-liter V6 TDI to 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque -- a full 10 horses and six lb-ft more than before. This means 0 to 62 mph runs drop to just 8.5 seconds, top speed increases to nearly 135 mph, and fuel economy rises to just over 24 mpg -- all while being expected to meet 50-state emissions requirements. Good news, to be sure; but is it any consolation for having to wait even longer for its arrival?

Has it taken too long for Audi to give us a Q7 TDI and are you willing to wait for one? And why can't we have the big boy versions? Audi is claiming the same TDI mill will be dropped into the A4 and A5 as well, but how much longer until we see those hit our shores? Post a comment and let us know your thoughts!
