LOS ANGELES -- Actress Lindsay Lohan, who recently spent more than a month in treatment for alcoholism, was arrested in Santa Monica early Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving and cocaine

The 21-year-old actress, who is already facing a drunken driving charge in Beverly Hills, was arrested at about 1:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Main Street, near the entrance to the Santa Monica Civic Center's parking lot, said Santa Monica police Sgt. Robert Hernandez.

Lohan was booked for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, possession of cocaine, and driving on a suspended or revoked license, Hernandez said. She was released after posting $25,000 bail.

In a hastily convened news briefing outside the police station, police Lt. Alex Padilla told reporters that another motorist -- whom he described as the mother of Lohan's personal assistant -- had called police on her cell phone and alleged that the actress was chasing after her in an SUV. Padilla said the assistant had just quit hours before.

Padilla said the other motorist -- the assistant's mother -- and Lohan were in the parking lot of the Civic Center and were arguing.

"When officers arrived, they detained the parties involved in the argument," Padilla said

"One of those parties turned out to be Lindsay Lohan," Padilla said. "After officers conducted their initial investigation, they determined that she was driving her vehicle under the influence. She was arrested for driving under the influence, and transported here to the Santa Monica jail.

Police said Lohan would not take a Breathalyzer test in the field but was taken into custody after other field sobriety tests were administered.

"While in the jail, officers found in her possession a small amount of cocaine. She was charged for driving for driving under the influence, and for possession of the cocaine," Padilla said.

"She was chasing after another car," Padilla said. "The other car was being driven by the mother of her personal assistant, who had just quit her job earlier ... probably about a couple of hours before the incident occurred. She was trying to catch the mother of her personal assistant. Why she was trying to catch her, we don't know."

Lohan was accompanied by "friends of hers," Padilla said. The two passengers were questioned and released, Hernandez said.

The actress "was cooperative during the arrest," Padilla said.

Breath testing by police registered Lohan's blood-alcohol level at .12 percent and .13 percent -- over the legal limit of .08 percent, Padilla said. Hernandez said the cocaine was found in Lohan's pants pocket while she was inside the police facility.

Padilla said the actress was "following or trying to catch up to the car that's being driven by the mother of her personal assistant."

"The mother then tried to make it here to the Santa Monica Police Department," Padilla said. "She didn't make it here. She ended up in the parking lot, and that's when she called the police department on her cell phone and we responded.

"The mother was afraid," Padilla said. "She wasn't quite sure what was going on, so she called the police because she wanted to make sure everything would be OK."

Padilla handed out copies of Lohan's booking photo to reporters, and declined to reveal other details of the case.

Upon her recent release from the Promises treatment center in Malibu, Lohan had agreed to wear a alcohol-detecting anklet.

Lohan's recent stint at Promises was her second round of treatment in less than a year. In January, she checked into the Wonderland Center in Laurel Canyon after supposedly passing out in a hotel hallway after party thrown for the Golden Globe Awards.

Lohan was scheduled to tape The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Tuesday afternoon, for a Tuesday night airing.

Why did the police HAVE to hand out photos of her booking photo? Cops love the attention just as much as the celebrities.

Authorities have released an audio copy of the 911 call made by the mother of Lindsay Lohan’s former personal assistant in the minutes before Lohan’s arrest.

The woman pleaded frantically for help early Tuesday because a mysterious car was following her, according to the audio copy, released Thursday. The 911 call lasted nearly three minutes.

Lohan, 21, was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence and with a suspended license, and felony cocaine possession.
Her personal assistant had quit hours before the event, police said.

The woman contacted a Santa Monica police dispatcher shortly after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday while driving on Wilshire Boulevard. She apparently didn’t realize the actress was in the white GMC following her.

“We were just about to park our car. We are turning home and out of nowhere a huge white GMC came up,” the woman said to the dispatcher.

“We’re being followed by a GMC … the gentleman jumped out of the car,” she said a few seconds later. “Oh my God, sir, they’re following us. We need help.”

The dispatcher repeatedly asked the woman for her location. The woman eventually said she was heading for the police station.

Police said the woman, accompanied by a passenger, drove her black Cadillac Escalade into the parking lot of Santa Monica’s Civic Auditorium, about a block away from the police department, followed by Lohan driving a Yukon sport utility vehicle.

During the call, the woman could be heard saying, “Oh my God, what is he doing?” Near the end, hysterical but muffled yelling and screaming is heard.

A few moments later, the woman could be heard in the background, apparently pointing out people to the officers.

“That’s him, that’s him right there,” she said. “And him, stop them.”

Authorities saw Lohan and the woman in what police have called a “heated debate.” They also said two men were with the actress in the car.

Three men have alleged they were with Lohan when she began chasing the woman, celebrity Web site reported Thursday.

According to the Web site, the men alleged that Lohan commandered the car outside a party in Malibu, about 20 miles away. One of the men claimed to have jumped out of the car just as Lohan accelerated, TMZ said.

The allegations could not be independently verified by The Associated Press.

Lohan’s lawyer, Blair Berk, declined comment when reached late Thursday by the AP.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Marty Fine declined comment and referred questions to a media representative who wasn’t available.

Los Angeles police and sheriff’s officials had no comment. They said they had not been contacted by the Santa Monica Police Department, which is leading the investigation.

Lohan’s latest film, “I Know Who Killed Me,” opened in theaters Friday.
