ASA Xtreme Adidas Cup Tournament Ends with Truck Fire

Source: www.cumminghome.com

As the second annual Atlanta Soccer Academy (ASA) Xtreme Adidas Cup was winding down with final games on Sunday afternoon at the Polo Fields, players, spectators and ASA staff members were all abruptly taken aback -- not by excitement generated from games determining winners in the Adidas Cup tournament, but by a parked, uninhabited navy blue Ford F150 pickup truck.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., spectators noticed grey smoke emitting from under the hood of the vehicle, and within minutes, clouds of black smoke began pouring out, followed by crackling sounds and eventually accompanied by flames.  ASA staff members attempted to squelch the fire without success, and spectators and players in the vicinity of the truck fire ran to the far side of the playing field closest to the burning vehicle, for fear that the truck was on the verge of exploding.  Several vehicles were parked near the truck, and those on the scene were concerned that a red vehicle parked adjacent to the burning truck would catch fire as well.

Young soccer fan, Jake Ellis, realized the severity of the situation and called 911.  When his call was answered by 911 operators, he handed his phone to an adult who explained the situation.  Within minutes, a Forsyth County police officer was on the scene with a fire extinguisher, but flames were too intense to be put out.  Minutes later, several Forsyth County fire trucks arrived and were able to extinguish the flames.

Fire department officials determined that the cause of the truck fire was a faulty cruise control and that a recall had been made on that particular Ford truck model.  The owners of the vehicle were able to retrieve items from the truck, including a child's car seat that had been seared by flames.

No one was injured in the incident.
