SEOUL -- Hyundai plans to sell a clean diesel engine in the United States in 2009 or 2010.
The company's first V-6 diesel, called the S-engine, will be offered on the Veracruz mid-sized crossover, says Dong Jin Kim, CEO of Hyundai Motor ***
The 3.0-liter diesel already is available on Veracruz models sold in Europe and Korea. But it does not meet U.S. standards for all 50 states.
"We think this is a very good engine," Kim says. "With a little more effort we can meet the U.S. requirements. Then we will export the Veracruz with that engine."
The engine was developed by Hyundai and uses turbocharging and cold-start technology from BorgWarner Inc.
The electronically controlled turbocharger results in better performance, greater fuel economy and reduced emissions, according to BorgWarner.
The engine generates 240 hp.
The seven-passenger Veracruz went on sale in the United States in March. It is Hyundai's first mid-sized crossover and is the brand's most expensive vehicle: $26,995, including shipping.
