Hello all. I am new to the site and I too have a faulty speedometer on a gmc1500sle4x4. It now sits in my driveway with a dial reading of 200+km/hr.(actually on upper most limit pin)??. I drove home from work and when I glanced down at the gauge,,, I was "going" 200km/hr...??, at a crawl, behind a school bus.
Is there not a spring holding this needle from needlessly going to the upper limit??..(as in a magnetic field system)(cabled system). I am concerned because I have no idea of the speed I am driving. I now rely on other drivers and experience in driving to gauge the speed. I've read up on this a little and found this page. My name is Mitch and I would appreciate some sort of serious reply, to this reply. Is there a recall for this?, or am I looking at a serious expense on my part?.

General Motors has been served with a class-action lawsuit. The litigation originates from users of 2007 and 2008 Impalas. The case claims that faulty rear spindle rods are causing tires to wear too easily. In 2008 GM addressed the problem for Impalas sold as law enforcement cars, but not to consumer car owners. General Motors could hand out millions if the lawsuit works.A lawsuit claims that this company treated the police better than it did average citizens when taking care of a defective part in 2007 and 2008 Chevrolet Impalas. The lawsuit alleges that Impalas from the two model years have defective spindle rods, which connect the suspension to the rear wheels. The defect causes the wheels to misalign, which makes the tires wear out faster. The tires could also wear out unevenly, increasing the risk of a blowout. There were at least 30 drivers who have sent complaints about the issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While none has reported an accident or injury related to the problem, several drivers said the rear of the car tends to swing out, especially when driving on snow or ice.I found this here: GM faces class action lawsuits over excessive tire wear

Would like to thank those who started this thread for the links and info.  Have a 2005 ESV that had this issue and was thinking of a $500+ repair myself, but luckily, found the site and info, and I qualified.  Truck has 56,xxx miles on it and was quickly taken care of by local Caddy dealer with no questions asked, no BS, no problems at all.

Funny thing is, owned a few others that fell under the potential problematic vehicles, but only an issue with the Cadillac.  2005 Gmc truck with 162k on it without any issues and runs as good as new!

Thanks to those who started, sued, and posted info!

Amazing though that the part is probably $5 and takes all of 20 minutes probably from start to finish to fix.  Heck, the guys at SoutherElectronics rip the entire cluster out in under 4 minutes and that's with time screwing with the camera and advertising their site!

I also enjoyed my Tom-Tom, as I used it extensively on long journeys with this truck that had the issue.  Once I got the rpm vs tom-tom speed all matched up, just watched the Rpms and cruised right along.

You can fix it yourself if you know how to solder. I followed the instructions on this page and all is good again.

I do feel taht this is a big issue. Of course it is a 2005. I beleive this issue should be delt with. They should fix it under a recall.

I have a 2005 Sierra 1500 Z71. Speedometer pegged a while back. Worked erratically for a couple of days then pegged. The shop has quoted $800 to replace and reprogram a new one. i don't have $800 to fix this right now, I know, within a couple of mph's, how fast I'm going based on RPM. Will the broken speedo affect anything else on the vehicle?

I have a 2003 Chevy Tahoe and the speed odometer pegged and I found a way to correct it but not good on the starter. Crank the car, let run for a few seconds and shut off.  Do it again. and again. Each time you do this the speed odometer will drop about 7 miles per hour. do it until you get it back to zero. Fixed for a short while but will do it again. This is not a fix. I also noticed that you have to wait until the speed odometer pegs out before this will work.
