Will greater mpg resurge truck/suv sales

At the second 2006 LA Auto Show, GM announced it's developing plug-in hybrids with the company's large trucks and SUVs to be the first recipients of said tech (e.g., Saturn Vue, etc.).
The effects are dramatic. GM's claiming its plug-in Vue can achieve up to 70 mpg. Even if the tech is commerically feasible and allows up to 50 mpg, that's a big jump from current figures, especially for large SUVs like the GMC Yukon.
Currently, sales of large SUVs are either plummetting or, at best, stable. Do you think GM's plug-ins would reverse such a trend? Or is the slide inevitable?
